tell you what I was told from asking the same question. The earphones he uses are like big so they block out a majority of engine noise. He said that at the first beginings of detonation it sounds like some static crackling in the earphones. This increases in intensity until its so loud that he has to remove the headphones. He said its only at this point that someone at the engine can hear audible detonation. I completely trust this guys tunings skills. He gets flown all over Asia to tune motecs so hes got good credibility. Also as you said about building the engine, my engine is built to last so Im sure it will be ok. I think these turbos are just really effecient and able to run high boost without much heat.
