In Reply To Actually the NA rear is CHEAPER than these gears... posted by JokerF15 (NyxMotorsports) on May 21, 2004 at 02:53 AM

Message Beware, my insomnia = long posts! ;)

:What you need to do the NA Rear swap
:NA Rear End (Diff + subframe)
:NA Driveshaft (1pc or stock 2 pc)
:NA Power Steering Pump (including the bracket to mouse pump to the block)
:NA PS reservoir

Bunch of parts to switch, not a single one with the gears. But you know this.

:You don't need a 'hicas eliminator' as the NA rear does not have any sort of a hicas unit.

But that's IF you can find a local full blown subframe on your car. Junkyards are completely out since even you have to admit it'd be $$$ from there. So you need to find a local junker NA private seller that wont mind selling you just the subframe, which needs to be removed (labor).

:By doing the NA Rear you do shed a decent amount of weight as the difference in weight between both rears is a decent amount. You also loose the Hicas solenoid in the front (cleans up engine bay), you loose the rear hicas unit (free's up weight)...

The weight isn't as much as you'd think, but you're right in a way. The thing here is more of a difference in thinking. Honestly, people are WAY too hyped up on removing HICAS. 95% of the people here don't use their cars in any way to have removing it be significant and of that 5% that do, probably only half of them have the understanding and skill to have the car at the limit and not need it. Others have echoed the same opinion but it's fallen on deaf ears since people just look for reasons to mod lately.

:In addition of the above item's i'd also do the Diff/subframe bushings, new PS hoses and what not. They will add cost to the setup.

Yep

:Now, with the NA rear you do have some weaker components such as axles and what not that you get along with the package, but if you wait out long enough you can find a setup for under 300 dollars (for the NA rear).

What's that? More money? More parts? ;) Add that to the cost of the original subframe, also add that you have to actively sell off the parts to get that subframe for $174 (after sales) + labor and it's close at best. And that's IF you accomplish the rest listed above. And you still may need axles later on since a lot of this market is drag racers. Thankfully not huge turbo cars, but the forces are on the launch and the turbo size matters a lot less there.

:The NA rear swap is not as hard as people make it out to be.

I don't recall anyone saying it was all that hard, but it IS labor. If people can do it all themselves, there's a chance that all the parts can be found if you bargain hunt and do some legwork. YOU are going to get it done cheaper and that's for sure. But I'm sure you understand that for some of us time IS money and most of us pay other people to do the work for whatever reason. With labor rates what they are, slapping some diff gears in is cake in comparison.

In the end, I know what you're saying and I love thinking like that. In fact, I think we're both right depending upon the circumstances. And seeing what I have seen after 5 years here, I think the vast majority would find it an easier and less costly purchase to go for the gears. I mean, I sure as hell wouldn't have waited this long with a complete NA subframe sitting TEN FEET from my TTZ if I wasn't confident in the idea. =)
