| that will enable you to 'tune' your audio system to its fullest, try and find yourself a head unit that has built it digital soundfield processing capabilites and either a user configurable parametric EQ or multi-band EQ. The reason I suggest this comes from experience. In my Z I dont have a head unit, unless you consider a multi-thousand dollar computer installation a head unit. I'm using the SoundBlaster Live 5.1 soundcard to pump all my jams through and connected the soundcard's outputs directly into the amplifiers (USAmps 600W 4 channel for front/rear channels, and a Coustic 350W amp for the 12" sub). The SBLive has a user configurable parametric EQ as well as digital soundfield processing, all of which allow you to specifically tune each channel of your system as well as provide spacial effects to get you out of 'the box' of an automobile soundfield. Winamp provides a 12-channel EQ with their interface, and the x-10 plugin module allows you to control all of winamp's functions and features from the x-10 remote control- AND it includes a built-in mouse with the remote! I currently have over 6000 high-bit (at least 192kb sample) MP3's and the clarity of the system gets a lot of notariety from those who have heard it. If you want to go the PC route, you could always get yourself one of the TFT display headunits (the ones with DVD players in them) and use a TV out card in the PC to feed into the headunit's aux video input to display the desktop. Feed the audio output from the head unit into the soundcard's line-in and have the soundcard directly feeding the amplifiers. The soundcard has AC3 decoding (for 5.1 surround) so anything you play in the PC will have full effect... Then all you have to do is build the PC case.. Here's a few pics of my install.

Once you have a PC in there, the possibilities are almost endless - you could put a Conzult or NProbe in there, a ZEMulator, GPS system, wireless internet, and on and on... Check out my website to see what kind of ideas I put together and how I built it all.. [ http://ashleypowers.com ]
