Cast pistons cannot handle as high of PMAX (maximum pressure in the cylinder) as well designed forged pistons can. Also, as Marshall said, you need a window that you can detonate in and be safe. The larger the window (which forged gives you) the better. So cast may be okay, but if you get a bad tank of gas or are tuning on the dyno and run into some detonation you can expect to crack a ring land in short order (or the like).
