Lets say you have an enclosure which is 1.0 cuft total. But your sub needs 1.0 cuft of air space to operate ideally. Sounds like you're in the clear, but your not. Depending on the frame geometry and motor structure size, your sub can actually displace anywhere from 0.08 to 0.11 cuft of air space, making your total required enclosure volume 1.11 cuft. In a case like this, you would need to add some polyfill. This makes the sub act like it is in a larger enclosure, compensating for the loss of airspace displaced by the sub. But if your enclosure is large enough for the sub AND its required airspace, then you do not need polyfill.
