...YugoBerinie said that the calipers' physical location is more for making room for suspension components. my thoughts: if a caliper can exert "x" amount of braking force at the 2 o'clock position (in relation to the calipers' position to the rotor face), then that same caliper is going to exert that same "x" amount of braking force at any position - 9 o'clock, 10 o'clock, whatever o'clock; basically, the surface area doesn't change (bernie was, as always, correct). now, as you mentioned the Z32's calipers being "a bit under developed," as in the number of pistons that the Z's calipers came equipped w/ (and amount of force each piston can produce, among other factors) in relation to the curb weight of the Z ...is a different story.
