ok if it is well maintained I think it is fair to say it can be very reliable given the high performance. Also figure it is pretty old and with all the complicated systems some things are bound to go wrong eventually. If you find a nice well maintained car and have a reasonable amount of cash reserves then you are probably ok. there are stories like those you've heard where people buy the car and then the engine and/or turbos go and $10k later everything is ok again. There are also people that have had them for years with few problems. For the most part however I think it is a great daily car. Wouldn't recommend to anybody faint of heart or wallet and it helps if you know your way around a set of tools. I would also recommend having another vehicle (beater) to drive as an alternate or in case the Z gives out.
