the date of sale, then you should be fine. The Release clears you of all future liability on the car, although the car may still be registered and titled under your name. When did you receive your renewal notice? If it was within 60 days of the sale, then don't worry about it. DMV's records weren't updated yet with your release. If you just received the renewal now, then DMV either didn't receive your Release or was unable to record it (illegible, etc). Find out from DMV if and when your Release was recorded, and take it up with them. Try to clear it up asap, since if the car is still under your liability, then you are responsible for all tickets and accidents involving the car. The buyer is supposed to have registered the car within 10 days of the purchase; since he apparently didn't do this, he's screwed on his end with more registration fines and stuff. Nothing for you to worry about as long as DMV has your Release on file. In CA, the plates go with the car and the new owner gets new plates when they register the car. Go look on your insurance records for the plate and vin number. Hopefully, next time you sell or purchase a car, you record the other person's info down.
