I was thinking back last night, and I've gotten compliments on the Z32 from four different cops. Two of which pulled me over, and decided not to ticket me afterall. 1. In '99 I was pulling out of a car show and was tagged at the front tip of the driver's side quarter panel by a hit and run driver. The officer that filled out the report commented "thats a real nice car, sorry this happened". 2. A year later, with the new facia, I had a cop follow me into a gas station. I knew I hadn't done anything wrong, but he was definatley scoping me for awhile before I pulled in. After I came out with my soda, I see he's parked sideways about 30' in front of the Z. I goto get in the car, nodding in acknowledgement to him, and he says "Pull it on up". Getting suspicious now, I replied "I don't like to start it and just idle in this heat, whats up ?" To my suprise he says something to the effect of " I love that nose! Where did you get that? I've got a 300ZX too..". You could have knocked me over with a feather ! So we talked shop for a bit, then I told him about the Stillen facia and recommended twinturbo.net. 3. Same year, driving in the right hand lane on a 6 lane divided highway, 55 mph speed limit, a van pulls out in front of me, doing about 10mph and hardly accelerating. I could have probably stopped in time, but decided to pass. Lane to left blocked, so I took the turn lane on the right and passed the van in a split second. 1/2 mi. ahead I've got rollers in the rear view mirror. Young cop in his mid-20s, walks up and he had seen the whole thing. He agreed that I probably could have stopped, then just said "Nice car, have a good day", and walks back to his cruiser. 4. More recently, I was running late for night class and got up on the throttle approaching the I-275 bridge across Tampabay. No sooner was I up to about 90ish, than I see the flashing lights behind me. This was one of the oldest patrol offiers I'd seen (50+ easy) and he gave me the all-time-classic "Where's the fire?" line =). I was ready, and played it up in a paniced state "Oh, I'm late for class and I've got finals tonight !" as I fumbled through the books and papers on the passenger seat. He didn't buy it right away, and asked where I was going to school and what my major was. I answered him and he nods then goes back to the cruiser to check the license and plates. When he comes back, he's got a written warning for me, says "nice car" and wishes me good luck on the "exam". Speed limit was 65, so I was probably close to 30mph over. Never had a negative experience like getting profiled in the Z or anything. Maybe the cops around Tampa just dig Z32s =)
