Message Our machinist lives next door to me and I stopped by there after filling up with boost fluid (windshield washer fluid) =) to take him for a 'before-and-after' spin.. I now have a new remapping for my car called PUMPFUEL&H2OINJECTION.zem and my standard PUMPFUEL.zem file. I loaded up the pumpfuel only program and dialed in 18psi of boost and we took off down the street - through 4 gears. Then I pulled over and turned the magic on. =)

PUMPFUEL&H2OINJECTION.zem loaded and 25psi of boost - through 4 gears to around 120MPH: Mike was grinning from ear to ear.

We spent a little while talking about it and he mentioned that it can also be used on high performance naturally aspirated engines that are using higher compression. The wheels in my mind began turning.

So I proposed to him that we make a naturally aspirated VG30DE with something like 12:1 compression to throw in one of our parts cars, cam the engine, port it, and use throw some TT injectors into the brew.

The problem with raising the compression on an engine is that it requires higher octane fuel to prevent detonation and buying race fuel all the time for daily driving just isn't going to be economically feasable. But the solution to that would be water injection that is triggered at a certain point of manifold vacuum. VG30DE's idle at about 18 inches of mercury of vacuum, and I would suspect that somewhere around 5 inches of vacuum, or around -4psi, you would need assistance to help control detonation. A simple pressure switch could be used to activate the water injection just like how one is used in the injection on a TT.

Not to mention the other benefits of using water injection such as cleaning the internals of the combustion chamber and intake manifold, and it will add torque to the engine as well since liquid water changing phases to gaseous water has a volumetric expansion rate of about 1:1700. Even on a stock NA VG30DE I would imagine that water injection is going to add some degree of power because of this, but with higher compression, cams, portwork, etc, it will be a necessity.

Sounds like a new project to me!
