| of the plug, the pressure and temperature of the cylinder begins increasing. This 'flame front' is a propogation of the burning of fuel and it progresses from the center of the chamber (where the spark initiates) out towards the cylinder walls and down towards the piston. Detonation is achieved when the fuel and air out at the edges of the cylinder spontaneously ignite from the rising heat and pressure that the initial burning of fuel is creating, and then the whole mixture of fuel and air begins burning at both ends. It usually causes the entire mixture to go off at once though and the resulting increase in pressure is so quick that it is essentially considered an impact load. This is what breaks pistons and this is detonation. Obviously the cooler the intake air is, the lower the chance of detonation. Water injection acts as a thermal 'buffer' to the combustion process as it absorbs a larger portion of the heat of the reaction. This keeps the air and fuel at the edges of the cylinder from spontaneously igniting and causing detonation.
