Message I once had a friend ask me why you dont make more traction by going to a pizza-cutter wheel... His thought was that by making the contact patch smaller, you are increasing the pressure per square inch of tire to the road which will mean more traction. While this sounds good, its far from correct.


Friction is dependent on the surface area and pressure of the two parts, in this case, the tire and ground, and the weight of the vehicle. Friction goes up if you either increase only the surface area, or increase the pressure. The larger the surface area of contact, the greater the friction so when you put wider tires on your Z, you aren't making the pressure increase, but you are increasing the surface area, which increases your friction (traction).
