Ok, once it's past its prime, junk it. However, it really isn't hard to do yourself. And you ARE better of rewiring the speakers. The stock wires are crap, and I've seen a few that had problems either in the connectors or elsewhere that caused the speakers to cut out. Even if you don't rewire, you will need to bypass the stock amps or buy one of the adapters that drops the speaker signals to line-level signals. In the end, you would be better off buying a decent head unit and replacing the stock amps and speakers with new speakers, then rewiring it all. The jackass that had my car before me didn't use a harness for the headunit, and did a crappy job hacking the existing connectors to use an aftermarket headunit. I'm tempted to go to a junkyard and hack the harness off something common like an Accord, and wire it back up. It's a complete disaster right now, but I'm running completely off amps in the hatch, so I rewired my speakers anyway.
