Message This morning on my 20 mile trip to work across I20 I had a mission. Even though I already knew what to expect, for the off chance that I had simply been dreaming all my life and had only convinced myself that I was right, but in fact was wrong, I put it to the acid test.

I was cruising at 80MPH, but in 5th gear the RPM was too low to make appreciable boost; I was going to intentionally make it ping. So I dropped into 4th gear and opened the timing/fuel control page of my ConZult and advanced the timing to +5 degrees.. This would make my car run 26 degrees of timing advance under full load on pump fuel. As I was laying into the throttle, I began applying brake until I was WOT and maintaining speed. AT about 16psi or so, it began pinging but boost continued to rise to 19 (where it is peaking) and I stayed in it. It continued to ping very aggressively and I began decreasing ignition timing back until I heard the pinging stop. The moment it stopped I looked at the screen and it was at -2, which would mean it was running 19 degrees of timing advance at the point it stopped pinging. I continued pulling like this, waiting for the poof, but I knew it would not happen. And I repeated this process once again before exiting the interstate.

So it appears that when it begins pinging, cylinder components do get hotter and in order to stop detonation, you will actually have to drop it lower than what it would normally be if it were not detonating previously. This is consistent with all points of my theory and my car is still running without any problems.

*Now I would not suggest anyone with stock pistons go out and do this. You will break a stock piston quite easily doing this. I really wouldn't suggest anyone do this unless you dont care if you break parts, of which I really dont care if it proves a point. If anyone would like to come by here and I'll be more than happy to demonstrate this, but bring a video camera so we can record it - I dont want to start giving detonation tours to everyone, LOL.
