| A 5 megapixel camera takes photos at about 2560 x 1920. With the picture 6 inches x 4 inches, that's 426 pixels across and 480 pixels down. If you have a printer that only prints out 300 pixels x 300 pixels, the printing software is going to have to drop out some detail, otherwise the final photo wouldn't fit on the sheet. Also, beware of the completely bogus "optimized" or "enhanced" resolution that printer or scanner companies claim. These are just software tricks and not true optical resolution. I have a scanner that says it does "2400 dpi", but really it only does 300 dpi. I also have a printer that does the same thing. Says 1200 dpi, but in reality it's much less than that, maybe only 200 or 300 dpi. Shady marketing tactics.
