Message Reciprocation starts somewhere in middle the connecting rod. The crank end of the connecting rod is rotating, while the piston end is reciprocating.

This is the reason that you cannot use a counterbalance to balance the whole connecting rod when you balance your assembly. You can only counterbalance rotating parts and not reciprocating parts.
