Your best bet is do as many internships as you can with well name ad firms or large companies. Have you decided what area of marketing you would like to start in?

Its very hard to get started unless you know people. Most people in Marketing start in an Advertising firm or in sales. Some people luck out and work in companies marketing departments usually as a researcher or a associate brand manager aka Marketing Assistant. It very tough but once you get 5 years of experience in a certain area or a MBA and 3 to 5 yrs work experience you start to make big bucks 80K a year usually and start doing some really cool stuff.

I have been working for a software company as a Marketing Assistant and Business developer. Unfornately I am being laid off and having been looking for 2 months now. I have seen a decent amount of ads for Marketing Assistants and coordinators. Sales is always plentiful I would go that route if its with a large well know company. I am also going to pursue my MBA this spring or next fall.

E-mail me if you want to send you info on ad firms and other marketing related stuff.
