for all you stillen freaks out there, i finally got the stillen exhaust on my car =) alex, you inspired me, lol. and yugobernie's constant propaganda against the hipers helped a little. lol. i traded my hks hipers for the stillen unit, straight up. both were approx. 2 years old. so i think i got a heck of a deal. the comparsion is between the HKS Hipers and the TT Stillen X-pipe catback exhaust (oval mufflers). I have a 1990 NA, stage 3 with 82K miles. here you go: SOUND 1. hks hipers- loud, boomy. drones at 2300rpm. i really liked the tone of the exhaust. deep rumble at idle, low boom under acceleration. a bit loud for long trips, but very fun to drive around town. 2. stillen- considerably quieter, even at idle. drones 300 rpms earlier, at 2000 rpm. very distinct tone, different from the hipers. in the upper register, the stillen sounds more like a high revving race car than the hipers because you can hear more of the engine tone than the hipers (which had more of a boomier exhaust tone). FEEL 1. hks hipers- in comparison to stock, i did feel a loss of torque. however, the exhaust really opens up on the highway. the car breathes great, and engine revs very freely. no restriction is awesome for the top end! 2. stillen- the z does feel like it gain a bit more torque, but to be perfectly honest, i'm not sure how much of a power difference i feel. the car does pull very hard on the highway and it's nice to drive around town with. CONSTRUCTION 1. hks hipers- 65mm piping diameter, aluminized piping, H-pipe. 2. stillen- 2.5" piping diameter, stainless steel, X-pipe. LOOKS all subjective baby! the reason the guy swapped with me was because he loved the looks of the hipers. i personally, was getting a bit tired of the angled look so i jumped on this opportunity for a swap. the craftsmanship in the stillen unit is awesome! the z now looks very sporty and classy at the same time. i am VERY happy with the quality of the exhaust. i think i made the right decision for the swap. but i am gonna miss my hipers tho =( just wanna thank rob (dogpile) once again for hooking us up with the shop... you're the man bro! thanks to dan (chivas) and pete (sportzcoop) for helping me out too. plus, ari (pa_z) thanks for all your advice on the exhausts. any questions, email me! later guys, i'll post pics soon.
