This is where the dollars come in. I have personally tried almost everything out there ( over the counter ) since the late 80's. When Twinlab only came in Weight gainer, then 1000, than 2500 and so on, ordered EAS Phosohgain back in 95 when you could only order it direct. That's the only supplement that sent me to the hospital. What it does is extracts water from your system and supplies it to your muscles ( Creatine ). I was in a Vector Unit in the Marines at the time and we trained hard all the time, like 20, 25 mile humps full gear. I could not keep up with the water my body needed no matter how much a drank and ended up going to the hospital on severe dehydration and brain swelling. It was a big wake up call, because before that, I was the type that took just a little more and the recommend daily use with other products. So I went from EAS to MuscleTech in 97 with their Tech Cell and Nitro Tech. Awesome stuff! Then again each person's metabolism is different and mine happens to be very fast and I lean out just sleeping, so I have to consume a lot of calories per day just to maintain. But wanting mass you need to keep your testosterone levels high along with what Chip stated. The older you get the less your body produces and in today's advancements in this realm makes using Steroids obsolete.
