Message ...just not yet on the VG30.

The following link *should* answer some of your questions:

rollerwave-intro.

There are also many other articles of interest on that site if you have the time...

This line of pistons was originally designed for Honda engines, but the combustion chambers are almost identical in configuration, so it is not hard to transfer what was learned to other engines.

One thing I have noticed about VG30's that have piston failure is that the ring land damage always occurs in the same area: The intake side quench pad. It just so happens that there is a mismatch between the quench pads of the piston and the head on this area. This creates a "dead area" in which detonation can start.

When you think about it, the dish of the piston is the floor of the combustion chamber. Why not make it interface with the shape of the combustion chamber in the head?

From what I can tell, the only consideration Nissan gave to the pistons in regards to the combustion chamber is the valve reliefs.

But then again, maybe I've been brainwashed by this guy at Endyne. But everything I've read makes perfect sense to me. He is a mechanical engineer who has made a career out of combustion theory. His initial testing involved using high speed cameras to actually view the combustion event. He has designed complete cylinder heads from scratch. It takes a bit of knowledge to do that imho...

We'll see how it goes...I'll be the first to run these in a VG30DETT. I'll surely keep everyone posted...
