Message I just finished up my short throw shifter install (yesterday). What was suppose to take about 30 minutes, 45 tops, took 3 and a half hours and a new tool ---> read on...
...I waited about a minute to install it once it came in the mail. Everything was going good, then I pulled out the old shifter. Afterwards, I put the new bushings on stillen shifter and procceeded to drop it in, only it didn't fit through the hole. So I took the bushings out to see if it would fit, my luck: it didn't. After a couple of 10 minute sessions of blurting out all words with bad meaning out, rationality came back in. It was at night, so I had to wait the next day to go to sears and pick up a metal file - a "hobbiest's rasp" (thank you sears!) Then for about 3 hours of solid grinding or 'boring' the shifter hole, it finally fit! I finished it all up and cleaned everything. But man, I was really surprised that I had to do that.
So, just a word of caution: those with earlier model Z's, be prepared to bore the existing hole on the "support bracket" (pg. MT-11 in factory service manual). If you get the stillen shifter. My car was one of the earlier '89 manufactured cars.
