What's cooling the air in an Air to Air intercooler is Core and Fin design. Stock intercoolers are small and become very ineffective when the volume of air exceeds their core size, but now adding years of on the road use with oil spray from cars in front of you ( 90% all cars leak oil somewhere ), then rock chips, bugs etc. These elements affect the cooling of the intercooler. Oils do it by layering a coat on the fins, now the air is not in direct contact with the aluminum fins. Rocks, bugs, dents, etc., deflect air off in many directions, thus breaking up the main stream flow of air that's intended to flow through the core.
