Message I have been to many large street events, and they can definitely become unsafe. 99% of the time everyone is being safe and there isn't a problem. The other 1% of the time you can have your occassional moron do something stupid by trying to show off and do donuts in the middle of a crowd, or burnout, etc. And occassionally you could get the spectator not paying attention and getting in the way. Those are all very rare incidents however.

Now this is where the biggest problem I have ever seen comes into play. COPS! When the cops show up, it causes complete and utter mayhem. People scramble to get in their cars, turn every which way, and fly away from the road as quickly as possible. Pedestrians get in the way of cars, cars get in the way of other cars, you have 4 lanes of cars trying to squeeze down a 2 lane road, etc. I have been very close to getting hit several times by people trying to squeeze in between cars and force their way through the traffic of people trying to run. I have been lucky and not been involved in an accident. I have however seen many many accidents because of this.

I have also done some secluded street racing, which is 100x safer, and is pretty much very similar to your drag strip experience. There is an industrial area around me with a long, straight, two lane road. While the road is only two lanes, it has a double wide shoulder on each side for 18-wheeler parking. So the road is basically 6 lanes wide with only two of the lanes being marked. There is no traffic on this road ever except when people from the warehouses and factories are going to and from work, and ups is making deliveries etc. There are absolutely no traffic at night, and they normally only have 18-wheelers in the parking lots and not on the roads. My friends and I have run our cars there many times. You can see a good mile down the road so that you can see any approaching headlights. The road is nice and wide so you have a good amount of space between you and the next person. I do not feel any danger racing there because of these reasons.

As for the big street meets, I've almost been hit too many times after the cops show up, so I do not plan on taking my car there and endangering it again anytime in the future. Especially since the cops show up every single time, it's just a matter of how long before they do.
