How do I check my compression?

    1. Warm up engine.
    2. Disconnect the crank angle sensor connector.
    3. Remove balance tube, all coil packs and spark plugs. See [ http://www.ttzd.com/tech/sparkplugstech.html ] for more detailed instructions.
    4. Attach a compression tester to #1 cylinder.
    5. Depress accelerator pedal, keep throttle wide open.
    6. Crank the engine for 5 to 7 seconds and record the highest pressure reading.
    7. Repeat test on each cylinder and record results.

If compression is low pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinders through the spark plug holes and retest.

If adding oil helps the piston rings may be worn.
If pressure stays low a valve may be sticking or is not seating properly.
If compression in any two adjacent cylinders is low and adding oil does not help the cylinder head gasket may be worn.

Compression gauge should cost ~$20-25 at any large auto parts stores, find one with a 1.5' extension tube with 14mm threads at the end.
